Am I due to recertify this year?
Recertification is due once every five years counted from the year you passed your credentialing examination. For example, if you wrote and passed your credentialing examination in 2020 you would be due to submit your first recertification package at the end of 2025, then again in 2030, and so on.
You will receive reminder emails in your recertification year, with the first reminder sent six months prior to the deadline. If you believe you are due to recertify and have not received a recertification reminder by July, please reach out to [email protected]
There is a chart outlining recertification due dates based on year of examination that can be found on the main recertification page.
On that page, scroll down to the section titled “Recertification Points Requirements and Guidelines” to find the chart.

What are the different membership categories listed in the recertification guidelines?
AIMVT has three categories of membership: general members, lifetime members, and emeritus members. Of the three, both active members and lifetime members must submit recertification packages, but lifetime members have different minimum and maximum requirements for certain categories. For more information on qualifying for the lifetime membership category, visit our lifetime membership information page.
Emeritus members do not have to recertify.

How many continuing education points do I need to recertify?
CE/CPD points requirements vary depending on your membership category, with the following minimum points from CE/CPD within your area of specialty.
There is no maximum for points obtained from CE/CPD within your specialty, but there are limits to the number of points that can be obtained from internal medicine topics outside your area of specialty. Full details on allowable totals can be accessed on the main recertification page.

- Lifetime member: 12 points

Can I recertify with CE/CPD alone?
It is no longer possible to recertify with only CE points.
As of 2025, all members must participate in the application review process at least once during their five year recertification period (both part one and part two applications must be reviewed). This means there is now a minimum required seven points of AIMVT service for all members (2 points for part one application review, 5 points for part two application review).
Lifetime members must meet a minimum requirement of ten points from either AIMVT service, professional development, or education.

How can I check to see if a specific CE/CPD course or offering is acceptable for recertification purposes?
All submitted CE/CPD must have been obtained during your five year recertification window. CE/CPD requirements must follow the same guidelines as the CE/CPD for new applicants (see Core Requirements section on CE eligibility)
Questions related to eligibility of specific CE/CPD can be directed to [email protected] or the Director at Large for your specialty. Fear Free certification is NOT eligible for recertification points. RECOVER certification IS eligible for recertification points.
Over-submission of specialty specific CE/CPD is encouraged in case of disqualification of submitted material.

I am missing a certificate for AIMVT Committee Service; how do I get my certificate?
Please direct all inquiries regarding missing certificates to the chair of the committee in question (i.e. Mentorship Committee, Credentialing Committee). The emails for individual committees can be found HERE.
Do I have to write exam questions?
Active members are required to submit ten potential exam questions with their recertification package.
Officers and Chairs of AIMVT are exempt from this requirement as are Lifetime members.
